Abstract:
This study sets out to explore the lived experiences of counsellors and psychotherapists working within a cancer/palliative care setting with clients who have cancer. It began with a literature review to place the present study in context and to find any existing gaps in the knowledge of the research. It continued by explaining different methodologies that could answer the question, starting with a short discussion between quantitative and qualitative methods before looking at different methods in qualitative analysis before reaching a decision to use the heuristic method. Five co-researchers participated and were interviewed using a conversational approach which enabled their stories to be told. This heuristic method of research will be described and then how the process within this guided the researcher in carrying out and analysing the data from the interviews conducted with other counsellors in this setting. The findings were analysed according to the framework given by Moustakas (1990: 51-52) and an individual depiction, a composite depiction, an exemplary portrait and a creative synthesis were then formed. A discussion of the findings follows, looking at the themes that emerged with time given to looking at the design and limitations of the study and recommendations for areas of further research. A short conclusion is included in the chapter.
