An evaluation of a youth counselling service: A pilot study

Abstract:
Youth counselling has been evaluated by interviewing eight participants about their experiences of counselling. Despite limitations, the study supports many previous findings. Themes identified included preconceptions; beginnings; speaking and being heard; and helpful and unhelpful aspects of counselling. Valued aspects of the counsellor and of counselling were identified. It appears to be difficult for participants to complain directly about current counselling. However, oblique references and long term difficulties arising from the closure of services and the loss of counsellors were raised. The approach used was discourse analysis. People appear to construct versions that allow them to consider their position in relation to the text, review their options, decide what they want and reposition themselves in relation to that. The difficulties people have doing this has been called the ‘to be or not to be’ discourse. Some implications for research were discussed. Heidegger’s concept of dwelling seems to epitomise counselling. By the offer of a place, a dwelling in which to be thoughtful, to dwell upon, young people appear to learn how to value themselves, take themselves seriously and take personal responsibility.
