Abstract:
This research focuses on the experiences of the role of theory within the psychotherapeutic relationship from the psychotherapists’ perspective. Discussion is centred on the psychotherapists’ experiences of working within theoretical constructs and the language used to describe this experience. Research sampling focused on psychotherapists working within an NHS setting. All interviewees have attained post-graduate levels of psychotherapeutic theoretical knowledge and are therefore familiar with theoretical concepts. Emphasis is not placed on any particular counselling or psychotherapeutic theory, instead it explores theory as a phenomena and how this relates to psychotherapeutic practice. The research method and methodology used for this study is discourse analysis which gives primacy to both the function of talk and the social constructs thus creating social interaction (Potter and Wetherell 1987). This decision was reached after exploration and consideration of alternative qualitative methodologies, including Grounded Theory and Phenomenology. The choice of discourse analysis where primacy is given both to language and text from a post-modern perspective was chosen for the purpose of this study. Semi-structured interviews were congruent to this research method and from those interviews data emerged and is used in the analysis. Using examples of metaphors and variation within the discourse, two concluding hypotheses are reached: 1. Psychotherapists feel safe when constructs are in place. 2. Psychotherapists do not personally identify with the negative use of theory. These hypotheses correlated to the linguistic evidence of discourse used within the interviews between participant and researcher. Literature pertinent to the research question reviewing theory highlighted notions of defence, power, language, ethics and professionalism. These are discussed and connections are made to the language used by the participants to post-modern philosophers Lacan and Derrida from a linguistic perspective, and Levinas from an ethical one.
